Back to School

Back to SchoolToday i was a mess trying to get the kids and myself together. Let me tell you, It is much harder with a 6 month old added into the mix. I’m exhausted. Hannah was super excited  and especially cute.  Preparing her school supplies for the following day, making sure everything was in order. Normally, bedtime consists of endless unnecessary questions or needs of hers that need to be met. Not last night! It was quite nice too. Tyler didn’t want to even hear the word school during summer break, but he got excited too. Friday night he wanted to go to bed at 8:00 to “practice” for the following week. Surprising to me because he doesn’t like school. I know that not everyone likes school and all i expect is that he tries his best and puts the necessary effort into it. They learn things your not sure your prepared to even talk about but reality is:  it’s only natural for them to question and have curiosity.  For instance, last year Hannah approached me with something that had me cracking up for along time afterwards. It went like this…

“Mommy do you know what a Penis is?”

“Yes, i know what a Penis is. Why do you ask?”

She says, ” You know, it’s what boys have down here”. I about fell over laughing, but i didn’t.

I ask her, “How did you hear about that?”

She says, ” Yvonne told me”

My response, “Oh, o.k….Yes, that’s what boys have”.

What was i supposed to say? I just acknowledged that that was the case and dropped it. Too funny. My sister told me about how she was at the doctors office with her son, and he was reading some brochure, and looked to her and asked, ” Mom what’s an erection”. She said, ” You know, it’s when your thingy gets hard”. He says, ” Oh, i thought that was a Boner”.

Funny stuff! I love it and look forward to those awkward yet memorable moments.

Then there are those times when as a parent you feel so helpless like when they tell you of kids being mean to them and hurting their feelings.  Or they get hurt and your not around to help them.  Knowing that you can’t always be there to protect them is a scary thing.  But it’s part of their journey to experience life and all that it has to offer- the good and the bad.

Every year i give my kids a little speech. I tell them that that i love them and that i hope they have a wonderful year. I also let them know that i’m there for them. If they need to talk to me, they can and about anything. I let them know that they are going to meet all different kinds of kids and to make sure that they stay true to themselves and be themselves.  I stress the importance of their education and i encourage their passions. Hopefully, they are listening!

Good Luck on your journey’s this school year!
